Well, it looked more like a knock-off of IMVU, and IMVU's boss Cary Rosenzweig said Google had tried to buy the company then hired away one of its co-founders. Whatever the background, Google Lively flopped, and The Official Google Blog now says Lively no more:

despite all the virtual high fives and creative rooms everyone has enjoyed in the last four and a half months, we've decided to shut Lively down at the end of the year. It has been a tough decision, but we want to ensure that we prioritize our resources and focus more on our core search, ads and apps business. Lively.com will be discontinued at the end of December, and everyone who has worked on the project will then move on to other teams.

These are tough times and it's no surprise to see Google cutting a failed project. But it inevitably raises the question: What else could go? The awful Knol must be top of most people's lists. Google Video looks surplus to requirements. Orkut could perhaps do with a mercy killing. Google Sites? Google Base? Notebook? Does anybody actually use those?

Google

Web 2.0

guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2008 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

privacy
/privv si, pri-/
• noun a state in
which one is not
observed or disturbed
by others
I’m sure you’ve heard throughout the conference that the very idea
of privacy is changing.
Particularly for younger people the definition of what is personal
and what is public information has shifted.
What I want to leave you with today is the thought that:
These are more than just tools, they have the capacity to change
the way we see and know each other.
Page 3
3
intimacy
• noun
1 close familiarity or
friendship
2 an intimate act or
remark
We all understand the concept of intimacy.
It’s one of the most important states we aim to keep private.
Wikipedia says intimacy has to do with rituals of connection.
Intimacy requires empathy, the ability to stand in another's shoes.
Think about:
Who would you say knows you intimately?
Page 4
4
friend
• noun a person with
whom one has a
bond of mutual
affection
We all know what a friend is… or do we?
Show of hands… How many of us are on Facebook?
How many of you have more than 10 friends, 50, 100, 200?
Did you know, psychological studies have confirmed that human
groupings naturally tail off at around 150 people? It’s called the
“Dunbar number,” based on the fact that apes need to constantly
groom each other to maintain their “friendships”, and they can
manage up to about 55 friends.
So how do you define what a friend is?
Is this concept evolving?
Page 5
5
stranger
• noun a person
whom one does not
know
What about strangers?
Is this concept evolving as well?
Are virtual friends strangers, or friends?
I’ve known for years now, people I’ve met in Second Life and we’ve
never met. Are they strangers or friends? And what about the
other 200 people in my Facebook “friends list”?
Sociologists are quick to point out that these new “social
networking” sites don’t measure or record the strength of the
connection, which can grow or shrink over time. If someone’s in
your Facebook list, are they your “friend”?
Maybe I need to spend more time “grooming” my friends?
Is Twitter the equivalent of e-grooming?
Page 6
Llifestreaming means you are displaying intimate facets of your life to friends, family and even strangers who you know through online world.

What’s Next for IE8

Dean Hachamovitch, General Manager for Internet Explorer, has posted today on the IEBlog about what’s next for IE8. Dean and his team have been busy analyzing all the data sent in since the release of Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 (which is a huge amount data). Based on feedback received on the transition from the IE7 Beta to final release – the IE Team wants to be clear about the plan for IE8. Dean highlights what’s next for IE8:

We will release one more public update of IE8 in the first quarter of 2009, and then follow that up with the final release. Our next public release of IE (typically called a “release candidate”) indicates the end of the beta period. We want the technical community of people and organizations interested in web browsers to take this update as a strong signal that IE8 is effectively complete and done. They should expect the final product to behave as this update does. We want them to test their sites and services with IE8, make any changes they feel are necessary for the best possible customer experience using IE8, and report any critical issues (e.g., issues impacting robustness, security, backwards compatibility, or completeness with respect to planned standards work). Our plan is to deliver the final product after listening for feedback about critical issues.

If you haven’t already – download Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 today and let the IE Team know what you think. You can also read my in-depth post on IE8 Beta 2 here.

You should also check out these 15 awesome IE8 demo videos as well to see some of IE8’s features in action such as the Favorites Bar, Web Slices, and Accelerators.
